Holiday cheer: New homes at City’s Gugulethu Infill project

It’s an especially festive holiday season for new homeowners of the City's Gugulethu Infill housing project. An additional 52 Breaking New Ground (BNG) homes were handed over to the qualifying beneficiaries of the Erf 8448 section of the project this week.
‘It is always a joyous occasion to hand over homes to qualifying beneficiaries. Today is even more special to us as it means these beneficiaries, the majority of them elderly and middle-aged, are celebrating the festive season in their new homes. It is also meaningful as this project has faced several significant challenges. Since the City completely took over this project recently, meaningful progress is being made.
‘The Gugulethu Infill housing project will deliver 1 004 homes to qualifying beneficiaries and their families. This is made up of 570 units at the Gugulethu Erf 8448 site and 434 at Mau Mau in Nyanga. Our teams are absolutely committed to completing the Gugulethu Infill housing project for the beneficiaries and their families as soon as possible. Thank you to all stakeholders, including our communities, City teams and project steering committees for their hard work in moving the rightful qualifying beneficiaries into their new homes. We are so pleased to see this project become a success. We have been firm and done everything possible to fight against extortion and other challenges and are now delivering to the people who deserve these housing opportunities,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim.
The project has experienced a number of challenges, including issues with the contractor, Covid-19-related delays, extortion attempts, the unlawful occupation of partially completed units at the Mau Mau site portion of the project and vandalism to work already completed.
Beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City's Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
